Nine NCAA championship events will take center stage in Iowa over the next five years. National champions will be crowned in eight different Division III sports, in addition to the Division I men’s basketball regional that’s coming to Des Moines in 2019.

The governing body of collegiate athletics has chosen more than 600 host sites for preliminary rounds and finals of predetermined championships in Divisions I, II and III to be held from 2017-18 through 2021-22. The NCAA announced the site selections on Tuesday (April 18, 2017).

Des Moines is getting the premiere event of the nine awarded to Iowa. The city won the bid to host first- and second-round tournament games at Wells Fargo Arena in 2019. Drake University will serve as the host institution and would be ineligible to play games at the arena should the Bulldogs qualify. UNI, Iowa and Iowa State, however, could be among the eight teams assigned to the regional. *CONTINUE READING BELOW*

The NCAA is bringing its marquee event to Des Moines for just the second time. The city initially hosted a men’s basketball regional in 2016, a tournament that included Indiana, Kansas and Kentucky.

Cedar Rapids was picked to host seven Division III (D3) national championship events in various sports, one of which is coming to Iowa for the first time.

After 19-straight seasons in Appleton, Wis., the NCAA is moving the D3 College World Series to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The venue will have the baseball tournament for at least four years, from 2019-2022. The Iowa Conference, which includes the Wartburg Knights and eight other teams, has agreed to be the host institution.

Cedar Rapids also secured the D3 women’s volleyball tournament in 2019 and the D3 wrestling championships in 2020 and 2022. Those events will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The other NCAA tournament awarded to Iowa is the D3 men’s volleyball championships. Loras College will host the 2020 event at the Athletic and Wellness Center in Dubuque.
