A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of northeast Iowa today (Thur., Jan 11, 2018). The forecast has caused some schools to announce adjustments to their class schedules.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of Northeast Iowa. The advisory will be in effect from  6:00 AM this morning until 6:00 PM this evening.

As per the statement, "A strong winter storm system is forecast to produce snow and potent winds to the area late today. A wintry mix of precipitation is anticipated to quickly transition to snow late tonight and continue to transition Thursday morning. The combination of accumulating snowfall and the strong winds may produce poor visibility and difficult travel conditions."

About one inch of snowfall is expected in northeast Iowa. Central Iowa is projected to receive as much as four inches today.

The NWS cautions that we may have to deal with slippery road conditions. This morning's commute may be difficult. Quickly falling temperatures will lead to freezing on roads and highways. Blowing and drifting snow could cause visibility issues too.

Tonight, bitter cold wind chills will occur over portions of northern Iowa tonight. Wind chill values will drop to 20 to 30 below zero.
