The Waterloo School District has placed a teacher on administrative leave following a controversial social media post.

The district sent out a text to parents Friday morning alerting them of the situation. District spokeswoman Tara Thomas confirmed that a West High School teacher was placed on leave, but she did not identify the educator.

Thomas said the nature of the content left on a social media post was "deemed inappropriate" by district officials.

The following statement was sent by the district to West High School families and staff in Friday morning's alert:

"We are aware of a social media situation involving one of our employees. The nature of the content shared rose to the level of putting this employee on administrative leave pending an investigation. We appreciate your patience as we sort through the details and thank you for respecting the process."

Thomas said district officials are investigating the situation.
