1,762 days. That's how long it had been since Waterloo East had celebrated a victory on the football field. That is, until Friday night.

The Trojans blanked Des Moines North, 38-0, in their season opener to decisively snap the program's 37-game losing streak.

“We said this game, the first game against North, we will win,” Trojan Coach Xavier Leonard told The Courier. “They are not going back to Des Moines with a win. We worked since May 1 to get that done and that’s what we did.”

Coach Leonard believes that this win could be a major stepping stone for his team. “This is big for our community, big for our school. We needed this. We needed this bad and we got it.”

After nearly five calendar years without a win, there was naturally quite a bit of excitement:

Prior to Friday night's victory, Waterloo East had been winless since October 24th, 2012--a 33-14 defeat of Davenport Assumption. The Trojans are home again this Friday to play Newton. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and fans!
