Wait, Dogs Can Sniff Out COVID-19 Based On Sweat Samples?

We have heard before that dogs have an incredible sense of smell and can smell things from miles away that humans never could. However, doe this mean that they can actually smell COVID-19 on someone? According to researchers in Paris, they can!

A new study from a national veterinary school near Paris has been training eight Belgian Malinois shepherds to sniff out COVID-19 from human beings sweat. Yep that's right, sweat. Apparently researchers believed that someone infected with COVID-19 had a certain scent and used samples of infected individuals to train these animals to sniff it out. So what was the success rate? Well, the shepherds correctly guessed an average of 95% of the samples and 4 of the dogs actually identified a positive COVID-19 case 100% of the time.

So, what does this mean for the future? Well, it could lead to faster and more tests for humans in public places to allow an end to lock downs. With dogs being able to sniff it out, more people could be tested and at a faster rate. Of course, this is just the beginning but it is also a positive sign for the future of this pandemic.
