A vehicle fire destroyed a garage and damaged two adjacent homes in Cedar Falls on Wednesday (May 1, 2019).

Public safety officers and firefighters were called to a residence at 2617 Viking Place around 5 PM. Public Safety Director Jeff Olson said the detached garage was fully engulfed when crews arrived at the scene.

According to Olson, a jeep inside the garage caught fire and consumed the entire structure after the owner's attempt to extinguish the flames failed. The fire was contained to the garage, but heat melted siding on two neighboring homes.

Olson described the damage as significant. The garage burnt down and no one was injured.

"This is one of those areas in town that doesn't have hydrants, so we had to haul water here," Olson explained. "That's always a complication."

Viking Place is a block-long street, located near the Greenhill Road-Viking Road roundabout. Olson said crews brought in water from the nearest hydrant, about a quarter-mile away at the intersection of Huntington Road and Luke Street.
