An early morning fire that damaged an Evansdale house has turned fatal.

Evansdale Fire Chief Ryan Phillips confirmed that Albert Schmitt, 30, died at a local hospital. Phillips said Schmitt was unconscious when firefighters pulled him from the burning structure at 429 Morrell Ave Tuesday morning (Jan. 15, 2019).

According to Phillips, the State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Schmitt's death.

Firefighters were called out to battle the blaze around 3:30 AM. When crews arrived, they saw flames shooting from the roof.

According to Phillips, the blaze damaged the back of the house and partially collapsed the roof. Officials haven't yet determined what sparked the fire. Phillips said the State Marshall Fire is assisting with the investigation.
