Major road work on University Avenue in Cedar Falls begins in earnest today (Monday, April 25, 2016).

The project's contractor is scheduled to start removal and reconstruction of the north half of the former U.S. Highway 218 corridor by shifting traffic head-to-head onto the southbound lanes from Grove St. to the Black Hawk Village shopping center. City officials said the lane closures will be in effect for four to five months, weather permitting.

Officials are asking residents to support the local businesses along University Ave. during construction by using detours or alternate routes.

Traffic has been restricted on that stretch of University Ave. for the past two months. The past seven weeks, workers have been replacing the water main and storm sewers in preparation to begin the massive reconstruction project.

The entire $32.5 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2018. Six roundabouts are being added to University Ave. The road is also being narrowed from six lanes to four.
