Two men have been arrested on charges connected to a home invasion in Waterloo.

James Welton, 40, of Independence, (left, in above photo) and Larry Clayton, 52, of Hazelton, were taken into custody Monday after authorities found them hiding inside the home at 532 1/2 Western Avenue. Police were dispatched to the home shortly after 6 PM to investigate a possible weapons violation.

When officers arrived, three occupants reported that four individuals had forced their way into the home. Police said two of the suspects fled the home, while Welton and Clayton were found hiding in the basement.

Welton was arrested on charges of fourth-degree theft, first-degree burglary, assault while participating in a felony, carrying weapons, intimidation with a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Clayton was charged with intimidation with a weapon, assault while participating in a felony and first-degree burglary.

According to police, one of the four intruders fired a weapon during the home invasion and a bullet grazed Ryan Butts on the check. Police said one of the guns seized by officers was a 9mm handgun that had been reported stolen from Cedar Falls in October.

The incident remains under investigation by Waterloo police.
