Authorities in are investigating a double-fatality tubing accident on the Turkey River in northeast Iowa.

According to Fayette County sheriff's officials, two women from West Union died Monday afternoon when they were swept over the dam at Clermont. Authorities identified the victims as 64-year-old Sharon Kahn and 44-year-old Vicki K. Hodges.

Sheriff's officials said they received a report that two people were in distress around 3:40 PM near Mill (U.S. Highway 18) and River Streets on the southwest side of Clermont. Deputies located and pulled both women from the water, but their life-saving efforts failed.

Kahn and Hodges were pronounced dead upon when they arrived at the hospital in West Union, authorities said.

Monday's accident was the second to occur on a northeast Iowa river in a span of four days. On Thursday, Winneshiek County authorities reported that two people escaped injury after their kayak capsized on the Upper Iowa River near Bluffton.

Sheriff's officials said a 53-year-old man and 49-year-old woman, both of Ames, became separated in the swift current. The man made it to shore and received assistance from a nearby resident, but the woman could not immediately be found.

Decorah firefighters later reported locating the woman using a drone. They said she had been stranded on the river bank.

The woman was escorted to safety and reunited with the man. Authorities did not release their names.
