The World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge Is About To Open

Meet the '516 Arouca' Bridge. Its name stems from the length -- 516 meters -- and the nearby town of 'Arouca' (in Portugal). It's not for the faint of heart.

It measures a distance of 1,692' --- longer than five football fields. At that distance it will become the longest walking suspension bridge in the world when it officially opens later this Fall.

The bridge is held up by steel cables and 576 feet below flows the Paiva River. You'll be able to get a good view of the river through the three-foot-wide metal grid that you'll be walking over. No thanks.

Construction on this bridge took three year. It was finished over the summer.

The previous record holder for ‘longest pedestrian suspension bridge’ is the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge (1,621 feet) in Switzerland.

According to Bridgemeister, Iowa has a total of 23 suspension bridges.
