‘The Voice': Jake Hoot Takes on Eagles Classic ‘Desperado’

It's now time for the top 8 Voice contestants to come down to the wire, performing live for coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani and John Legend, as well as for America's votes. This Monday (Dec. 9) marked '80s Night, in which the singers both soloed and dueted on songs some of them were not even alive when they first came out.

Coach Kelly's beloved Jake Hoot, who has been holding the traditional country candle up in defiance to Shelton's team (which is not delivering country on the same level this season), decided to pay homage to his mama with one of her favorite songs, the genre-bending "Desperado" by classic rock icons the Eagles.

"I'm one of nine," he explained to the audience. "If [my mom] wasn't holding one of us, there were three of us holding on to her skirt. Mama is an incredibly special person to me, and I'm super excited to sing one of her favorite songs."

Hoot even called his mother to tell her the good news, then followed up with a lushly presented version of the not-exactly '80s, but still fairly close at 1973, gem.

Clarkson had no problem praising her well-loved team member, noting, "Literally there's a microphone in your throat projecting. It's an incredible voice you have. The thing I love about you, and growing up on country music—it's the story that matters to you. This song mattered to you. There's a story. There's a message. You delivered it so eloquently, it was classy. So perfect!"
