A special election to fill a vacant Iowa Senate seat is being held in Black Hawk County on Tuesday (March 19, 2019).

Republican Walt Rogers, Democrat Eric Giddens and Libertarian Fred Perryman are all hoping to win the District 30 race. Voters must decide which of the three candidates from Cedar Falls will fill the seat that was previously occupied by Jeff Danielson, a Waterloo Democrat.

District 30 covers Cedar Falls and Hudson, as well as portions of Waterloo. Polls are open from 7 AM to 9 PM.

Flooding has forced county election officials to temporarily change a Cedar Falls voting site. Ward 1 Precinct 1 voters who normally cast ballots at the Eagle's Club near Black Hawk Park on Lone Tree Road should go to the Duke Young Conference at Cedar Falls City Hall, 220 Clay Street.

Another voting site change effects Cedar Falls residents in Ward 3 Precinct 3. They will cast ballots at Gilchrist Hall on the University of Northern Iowa campus instead of the UNI Bookstore, which is closed for spring break.

The site changes are for Tuesday's special election only.

Gov. Kim Reynolds set March 19 as the election date following Danielson’s resignation last month. Danielson left the Iowa Senate to become central region director for the American Wind Energy Association.

Rogers served eight years in the Iowa House as District 60 representative before being unseated by Rep. Dave Williams in 2018. Giddens is a program manager for UNI's Center For Energy and Environmental Education and a member of the Cedar Falls Board of Education. Perryman is an assistant manager at a Cedar Falls retail store.
