Shane Kavanagh scored his second goal of the game with 38.5 seconds left in overtime to nudge the Dubuque Fighting Saints past the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-3 at Mystique Ice Center Friday (Feb. 19, 2016).

Dubuque claimed the win despite never leading in regulation, while outshooting the Hawks 38-20 in the first 60 minutes of action. Cale Morris made his best save of the busy evening 15 seconds into overtime, denying Brett Boeing’s attempt to capitalize on a turnover just inside the Waterloo blue line. Morris finished with 39 saves, but couldn’t stop Kavanagh’s final chance as the veteran forward cut across the crease and flipped in a shot through traffic.

Kavanagh had also tied the game with a Dubuque power play goal from the right circle with 6:03 left. Waterloo’s third period edge had been established by Liam Pecararo at 6:07; Yuri Terao swiped the puck in the slot and appeared to be triggering a wrist shot while actually sweeping a pass to Pecararo, who knocked it into an open side.

Near the end of the Black Hawks’ lone power play of the night, Terao and Pecararo had been responsible for the goal which put the visitors ahead 1-0. At 9:28 of the first period, Terao lifted a shot from the left dot and cleanly beat Jaxon Castor to the goaltender’s right side. Pecararo set up the chance with a circle-to-circle pass.

David Cotton stretched the Waterloo lead to 2-0, 6:01 into the second, going to the net to knock in the rebound of Marshall Moise’s initial shot. However, the Saints started their rally less than a minute later at 6:58. That’s when Dallas Gerads redirected a centering pass by Zach Solow while standing on the edge of the crease. The Saints brought the game to even terms at 12:06, when Morris was screened on a long Gordie Green opportunity, as Green stepped into the offensive zone.
