Ron Glass, a prolific character actor in Hollywood, died on Friday (Nov. 25), the actor's rep confirmed to Variety but didn't reveal a cause of death.

Born in Evansville, Ind., Glass studied drama and literature at the University of Evansville. He started his career with guest parts on Sanford and Son, All in the Family and Hawaii Five-O in the 1970s. But he perhaps is best known for his role as Ross Harris, the NYPD detective on the classic ABC sitcom Barney Miller. Glass would earned an Emmy nomination in 1982 for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role.

After Barney Miller, Glass would move on the make guest appearances on such shows as Family Matters, Murder, She Wrote, Friends, among other shows. Glass also portrayed Shepherd Book on the 2002 cult sci-fi series Firefly and its 2005 movie, Serenity. Most recently, Glass appeared as Dr. Streiten on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Paul Lomax on C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation.

Upon hearing the sad news of Ron Glass' death, Hollywood stars like Samuel Jackson and Sinbad went on Twitter and pay tribute to the beloved actor.
