Voters in several Northeast Iowa communities went to the polls for special elections yesterday (Tuesday, April 5).
Residents in the Oelwein Community School district approved a public measure, regarding a Revenue Purpose Statement. The renewal for the use of the local option sales tax easily passed, 205 yes, to 38 no.

At North Fayette/Valley, a similar measure regarding the continuation of the local option sales tax, was passed, 103 yes, to 24 no.

Voters in the Starmont School district also approved a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy, by an unofficial vote tally of 108 yes, to 101 no.
Each of those measures needed a simple majority to pass.

In Marquette, residents were asked to fill vacancies for mayor and a council seat.
The new mayor of Marquette will be Larry Breuer, who held off a challenge from John Winter. The unofficial total was: Breuer-57 votes, Winter-47 votes. Breuer will hold the seat until the end of 2017.

For the council position, also an unexpired term to run through the end of 2017, Steve Eagle defeated Ryan Young, 57 to 50.

The vacancies were created in January, when then-mayor David Schneider and councilperson Rinda Ferguson, resigned over a conflict with the rest of the council on a zoning issue.
