Many events in Iowa this summer have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but organizers of the state's largest Celtic festival are moving forward with plans to hold the event in downtown Waterloo.

The 14th annual Iowa Irish Fest is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 2 in Lincoln Park and the surrounding area. Festival Director Chad Shipman said all band and entertainment are still booked, vendors are signed up and several workshops are in the works.

"Our plans are, the show must go on," Festival Director Chad Shipman said in a press release.

Shipman indicated that many volunteer shifts remain open. He's encouraging everyone to register for the 5K, High Nelly and Celtic Cruise events. He said the family fun and learning area will feature new games and educational experiences.

"As most of us are doing, we continue to monitor and receive communication from our local governments regarding safety, cleanliness, hand washing, social distancing, crowd gatherings, and how best to proceed with events like the Iowa Irish Fest," Shipman said. "Of course if our community should happen to still be locked down by mid-July, we will take what steps are necessary to comply with the rules that will apply at Fest time.

"Again, we are all still planning on a Fest this year so please spread the word," Shipman said.

Iowa Irish Fest has continued to grow in size since the first event was held in 2007. Nearly 1,200 volunteers and 85 planning committee members were involved in last year's festival. Business partnership sponsors and grant funding in 2019 totaled around $250,000, Shipman said.
