Northern Alaska Just Began its ’66 Days of Night’

Yesterday afternoon the city of Utquiagvik, Alaska, (formerly known as 'Barrow') witnessed its final setting of the sun until January 23rd. The city is located North of the Arctic Circle and for the next 66 days the sun will be just below the horizon, giving the area a seemingly never-ending feeling of dusk.

On Wednesday, the sun in Utquiagvik rose at 12:54 PM and set just 34 minutes later at 1:29 PM.

The residents there will not see the sun partially above the horizon again until January 23^rd.

In the second week of May in Utquiagvik, the sun remains above the horizon the entire day and it will not set for about 80 days, until around August 1^st.
