C-3PO, Wall-E, Optimus Prime, RoboCop, Gort, Sterile Cart... Wait, Sterile Cart?! Yes, Sterile Cart! That's the name of Hy-Vee's newest erm, employee (for lack of a better word). Meet Sterile Cart, the cart cleaning robot you'll likely see soon at a Cedar Valley Hy-Vee. I think its kinda cute.

According to a press release sent to this radio station from Dawn Buzynski, Strategic Communications for Hy-Vee, more than 200 Sterile Cart's will be in service before the end of November. But what exactly is Sterile Cart, you're likely asking. Well, it's pretty simple. He... she... it is a robotic cart cleaner that will ensure your cart is clean and germ free when you grab it at Hy-Vee.

Kristin Davidson of Ultra Green, the company behind Sterile Cart says,

The Sterile Cart system uses a hospital-grade disinfectant that is proven to kill 99.9% of germs and viruses that cause illnesses, including coronavirus.

Perhaps what's even more impressive is how quick Mr. Cart operates and how small its footprint is. Davidson says,

The system ships fully assembled, takes up minimal space and sanitizes 1-2 carts per second.

So when will we see one of these sanitizing bots at a Hy-Vee near us? Will we get one during that November rollout? Well, Hy-Vee isn't saying which specific locations are getting one just yet, but with germs on everyone's mind in the midst of this pandemic, I'd wager we'll start to see 'em before the end of 2020.

I'm impressed with the Sterile Cart, don't get me wrong... but I'll be really impressed when Sterile Cart can help me find the right flavor ice-cream in the frozen section without 15 minutes of searching...

Hy-Vee is headquartered right here in Iowa (West Des Moines) and Ultra Green, the company behind the Sterile Cart is based in neighboring Minnesota.
