The Marion Community School District has come to an agreement on the last lawsuit stemming from sexual abuse involving a school volunteer four years ago.

The lawsuit was filed by the family of a 5-year-old who was a kindergartner at Starry Elementary in January of 2016. The family alleged their daughter was sexually abused by Logan McMurrin at that time. The settlement was for $2 million.

McMurrin was a 15-year-old volunteer at the school when he was accused of sexual abuse. In January of 2017, he was convicted on three different counts of sexual abuse, second degree, and sent to the Iowa State Training School for Boys. According to the Gazette, McMurrin was released when he turned 18 last spring. He'll be on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry for the rest of his life.

In April of 2017, teacher Diane Graham was charged with failure to report child abuse as a mandatory reporter. She was acquitted by a Tama County jury in January of 2018. She started working at Vernon Middle School in Marion in March of 2018.

The insurance company for the Marion Community School District had already paid a total of $3.3 million on five other lawsuits involving the abuse. In total, $5.3 million has been paid to parents to settle the lawsuits.
