Keith Urban's 'We Were' Makes for Nostalgic 2019 CMAs Performance

Keith Urban brought his latest single, "We Were," to the 2019 CMA Awards. The country star delivered the nostalgic song beautifully during Wednesday night's (Nov. 13) awards show.

Dressed in a leather jacket and white t-shirt, Urban began the performance by simply introducing the song: "This song is about a first love, fake IDs, leather jackets on the back of a Harley, maybe sneaking into a club ... thinking it would always last and now we're going to fade like a stamp on the back of a hand." Then, it was just Urban, his guitar, talent and one amazing song at country's biggest party of the year.

Urban originally recorded "We Were" without realizing that Eric Church had actually helped pen the song, with Jeff Hyde and Ryan Tyndell. "I found out and I called Eric, and I was like, 'Dude, I just cut this song.' He was thrilled," Urban recounted back in May. "I said, 'I had no idea that you were a writer on it.' He said, 'Well that's even better, because it means you really loved the song.' I do. I really love the song."

The two recently re-recorded the song as a duet. Urban and Church previously collaborated with each other on their 2015 hit "Raise ‘Em Up,” which comes from Urban's 2013 record Fuse.

Urban is nominated for both Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2019 CMA Awards. "We Were" is the first single from a new, yet-to-be-announced album from the country superstar.
