I believe the saying is "If you don't like the weather in Iowa, wait 10 minutes and it will change."

The sad part about this saying is...it also works the other way. We've had a beautiful past 3 days in eastern Iowa with temperatures in the 70s/80s and the sunshine out in full force. Sadly, our 10 minutes might be up tomorrow (April 16).

Middle of the road too severe weather is expected for most of central, eastern, and southern Iowa for a large chunk of our day. According to the US National Weather Service; Cedar Rapids, Tipton, Iowa City, Sigourney, Davenport, Marshalltown, Des Moines, Ames, and just about every city south of Waterloo could experience 2 strong storms.

The Weather Service reports a threat of 3 out of 5 for a large chunk of Iowa, which could include large-size hail.

The first round of severe weather may begin before you even wake up. The first storm is expected to begin around 2 a.m. and potentially last until 8 a.m. The second round of storms will begin around 1 p.m.

The second round is the most uncertain but the afternoon storm could bring the hail as well as "a few tornadoes."

The Weather Service also mentions heavy rain with possible flash flooding in urban areas and/or areas with poor drainage.

On the bright side, it is possible that after the first storm, the severity of the second storm may lower. If we do see the weather improve after the first storm, the second storm threat should lower in severity.

Reminders

I know you know all of these reminders so these are for your family, friends, and neighbors who don't. According to the National Weather Service

  • Thunderstorm Watch - these are issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in or near your area
  • Thunderstorm Warning - A severe thunderstorm has been spotted. Hail of one inch or larger in diameter has been found and/or winds of at least 58 miles per hour have been measured.

When a watch has been announced, be prepared to take action and get to a safe space. When a thunderstorm warning has been announced, seek shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorm warnings can produce tornadoes unexpectedly with little to no warning.

It should also be noted that lighting frequency is not a determining factor for issuing a thunderstorm warning. Lightning strikes will normally last no longer than 1 hour.

Pay attention and stay safe tomorrow if severe weather strikes. You don't want to be caught driving if you can avoid it if a thunderstorm warning has been issued.
