Back in 2001, Iowa adopted what's called the 'Safe Haven' law. This was created after an Iowa teen mother killed her baby shortly after it was born at her home. The law allows Iowa parents to leave any infant who is 30 days of age or younger, at a hospital or healthcare facility without being prosecuted for abandonment.

KCRG reports that a baby girl has become the 46th child to be surrendered under this law. The baby was born in late September and the information was made available by  the Iowa Department of Human Services. If you're curious what happens to infants surrendered, all safe haven babies are placed with a foster or adoptive family.

All 50 U.S. states offer some variation of the Safe Haven law to protect infants from being abandoned or worse. More information on the Iowa Safe Haven law can be found here.
