The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal brought plenty of rain to eastern Iowa Tuesday.<!--more-->

Most of the precipitation fell in Fayette County. The highest rainfall totals reported by the National Weather Service and weather observers were 5.25" near Oelwein, 4.6" near Stanley, 4.5" near Randalia and at West Union, and 4.25" near Maynard.

Other significant rainfall totals recorded Tuesday included 3.96" at La Porte City, 3.92" near Independence, 3.63" at the Oelwein Airport, 3.5" near Waterloo, 3.24" at Vinton, and 3" at Decorah and Quasqueton.

Tuesday's heavy rain produced flash flooding near Oelwein that left several roads underwater, including Iowa Highways 3 and 150. Dry Run Creek topped its banks, sending water into neighborhoods in the northeast part of Oelwein. On the west side of the city, high water inundated areas near the West Charles Street viaduct. The flooding also impacted the tower sites for a couple of our radio stations (See the photos below).

Northeast of Oelwein, moderate flooding is expected along the Turkey River in Clayton County. The National Weather Services has posted a flood warning for the Turkey River at Elkader through Saturday morning.

At 7:45 AM Wednesday, the river stage was at 13.8 feet. That's nearly two-feet above its 12-foot flood stage. Minor flooding was occurring.

The Turkey River is expected to continuing rising. The river is forecast to crest near 18.0 feet Thursday morning, and fall below flood stage Friday.

Off-and-on showers and thunderstorms are expected Wednesday, as Cristobal moves away from Iowa. Another weather system is forecast to bring more rain, but the precipitation isn't likely to be as heavy or widespread as Tuesday. Some areas could get as much as three inches, which could cause additional flooding or flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Wednesday afternoon for Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Delaware, Grundy, and Tama counties.
