Discoverer of Sullivans’ Sunken Ship to Speak Tonight in Waterloo

On November 13, 1942, the USS Juneau was hit by a Japanese torpedo and quickly sank near the Solomon Islands. Aboard the ship were the Five Sullivan brothers; George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert Sullivan of Waterloo --- all died as a result of that sinking, along with nearly 700 shipmates; only 14 sailors survived.

The wreckage of the Juneau wasn't discovered until March 2018, and tonight, Paul Mayer, a member of the crew which discovered the ship's final resting place, will be at the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum in Waterloo to show video footage of the USS Juneau and answer questions from the public.

The museum is offering the program free of charge, but free-will donations are welcome to help build an exhibit to display the Petrel’s USS Juneau footage. Members of the Sullivan family will be in attendance. Get more info HERE.
