Tonight's Area High School Football Schedule

It's week two of the Iowa high school football season, and there's a full schedule of games involving teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa tonight (Friday, Sept. 2, 2016).

Among the area games are a few marquee match-ups.

Defending Class-A state champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck, which is ranked fourth, plays at Dike-New New Hartford, rated seventh in Class-2A. Gladbrook-Reinbeck opened the season last week with a 7-6 victory over Grundy Center in the 97th annual meeting between the two rivals. Dike-New Hartford suffered a last-second lost at Denver, falling 25-22 to the fifth-ranked (Class-1A) Cyclones.

Another game between two potential playoff teams takes place in West Union, where North Fayette Valley hosts Waverly-Shell Rock. The unranked Go-Hawks opened with an impressive 31-14 victory over Crestwood of Cresco last week, while North Fayette Valley -- ranked No. 2 in Class-2A -- won at Decorah, 28-7.

The top game in Class-2A this evening will be played at New Hampton, where the fifth-ranked Chickasaws host No. 6 Waukon in an early-season top-10 showdown. Another rated 2A team with a tough challenge is No. 3 Mount Vernon, which faces West Delaware in Manchester. West Delaware is currently ranked No. 8 in Class-3A. For most teams, tonight's games are the final tune-up before the race for playoff berths begin.
