A new Class 5A champion will be crowned at the 2020 Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament.

Pleasant Valley defeated Cedar Falls 3-1 in the tournament quarterfinals at Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids Monday afternoon. Set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23.

Senior Emmy Wedgebury led the Tigers with 18 kills and also recorded 19 digs, the second-most on the team. Sophomore Katie Remmert had 16 kills and junior Anisia Smith added 14. Junior Alivia Bronner had a team-high 21 digs for Cedar Falls.

Cedar Falls, which won the 5A state title in 2019, finishes the season 26-6. Pleasant Valley, the No. 3 seed, advances to play Ankeny in the semifinals Wednesday morning.

The Hawks beat crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial in four sets, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-17. McKenna Scheib and Phyona Schrader led Ankeny with 12 kills apiece. Lexi Stephens had 17 digs.

The other Class 5A semifinal on Wednesday will feature Dowling Catholic of West Des Moines and Iowa City Liberty. Both teams won the quarterfinals in four sets. Olivia Nahas led Dowling with 17 kills and 13 digs in the Maroons' victory over Dubuque Hempstead. Kassidy Hartman had 17 kills and Addie Schmierer tallied a team-high 18 digs in Liberty's win over West Des Moines Valley.

In Class 4A, West Delaware and Western Dubuque will face each other in the semifinals after both survived five-set quarterfinal matches Monday.

Sixth-seeded West Delaware upset No. 3 Glenwood 25-17, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22 and 16-14. Alivia Schulte recorded 23 kills and Ella Koloc tallied a team-high 36 digs for the Hawks.

Meg Besler led Western Dubuque with 13 kills and Ella Meyer had 21 digs. The Bobcats beat Sergeant Bluff-Luton 25-14, 19-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-11.

The top two seeds in Class 3A advanced to the semifinals with straight-set wins Monday night. No. 1 Osage defeated Humboldt 25-13, 25-22 and 25-19, and No. 2 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows eliminated Red Oak 25-13, 25-22 and 25-19.
