Don Bosco got off to an early lead and never trailed as the Dons defeated Tri-Center of Neola, 11-1, to advance to the Class-1A semifinals at the Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines Saturday night (July 23, 2016).

The Dons (35-4) scored one run in the bottom half of the first inning. The frame began with Cade Schares getting hit by a pitch. He later scored on  Austin Miller's single to shallow right field.

Don Bosco broke the game open with a five-run second inning. Tri-Center starting pitcher Konnor Handy allowed five runs off three hits and walked two batters. The Dons also took advantage of fielding errors.

Handy was chased after 2.1 innings of work where he allowed seven runs (five earned) and six hits. He also walked three and struck out three Don Bosco batters.

Baylor Bedard, meanwhile, gave the Dons 5.1 strong innings on the mound. He struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits and four walks while shutting out the Trojans.

Tri-Center (19-9) was held scoreless until the top of the sixth when Handy ripped a single up the middle off Trever Brown. Kaleb Harrison, who reached on a walk, scored on the play.

The 10-run rule ended the game in the sixth inning. Don Bosco plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to finish off the Trojans, 11-1.

The Dons advance to play West Sioux at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Class-1A semifinals at Principal Park.
