Trent Johnson ran his way into the Iowa High School record book while leading Dike-New Hartford to a first-round playoff victory Friday night (Oct. 28, 2016).

The senior tailback scored seven touchdowns and became the state's all-time leading rusher in the Wolverines' 55-29 win over Southeast Valley of Gowrie in a Class-2A game at the Gunderson Sports Complex in Dike.

Needing 415 yards to tie the rushing record, Johnson ran for 424 on 26 carries. He reached and surpassed the total on a 35-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, moving him into first-place on Iowa's career rushing list. The previous record of 7,142 yards was established by Levi Ferguson of North Mahaska from 2002 to 2005.

Johnson ended the game with 7,151 career rushing yards, a total that will remain unofficial until certified by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). He is the fourth player in state history to rush for more than 7,000 career yards.

According to the IHSAA record book, Johnson's 424-yard night was the third-best rushing performance in Iowa playoff history (all classes). His seven rushing touchdowns were the second-most by an individual in a post-season game.

Johnson scored on runs of 14, 4, 75, 11 and 13 yards in the first half, helping Dike-New Hartford build a 42-22 lead over the Jaquars at intermission. He added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, scoring on 73- and 35-yard runs.

With the victory, Dike-New Hartford advances to the Class-2A quarterfinals. The eighth-ranked Wolverines will next play at Prairie City-Monroe (PCM) on Nov. 4.
