Dike-New Hartford To Play For 1A State Title [PHOTOS]
2018 Iowa High School Football Playoffs
That's the motto Dike-New Hartford's football players have been motivated by since the season began. The Wolverines are now one win away from completing the task they set out to accomplish.
Dike-New Hartford will play for the Class 1A state championship following a 34-21 win over Pella Christian in the semifinals of the Iowa High School football playoffs at the UNI-Dome Saturday morning (Nov. 10, 2018).
The Wolverines have played in four title games since Dike and New Hartford merged in 1992, but they've never won the crown. Their last appearance in a state title game was in 2010, a 42-0 setback to perennial power West Lyon of Inwood.
After trailing 7-6, Coach Don Betts' squad scored the next 28 consecutive points to secure the victory. The biggest play was a 70-yard pass from Drew Sonnenberg to Parker Kiewiet in the third quarter that put the Wolverines ahead 34-6. The touchdown bomb occurred right after Kiewiet intercepted a Pella Christian pass, one of his two picks on the day.
Sonnenberg ended the game with 290 yards and two touchdowns, while completing 10 of 21 passes. Cade Bennett led Dike-New Hartford's rushing attack with 145 yards on 32 carries and two scores.
The Wolverines (12-0) will play West Sioux of Hawarden (11-1) for the 1A title. The game is scheduled to start at 11 AM on Friday, also at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
