Black Hawks Goalie Earns USHL Honor

Robbie Beydoun’s first appearance in the crease for the Waterloo Black Hawks was memorable and helped him earn the United States Hockey League’s CCM Goaltender of the Week Award on Monday.

Last Friday, the eve of his 20th birthday, the Plymouth, Michigan, native made 27 saves against his former team, the Fargo Force, during a 2-0 Hawks victory. For good measure, Beydoun even set up the winning goal and was credited with an assist when Nick Swaney broke the deadlock. A scoreless matchup until the early minutes of the second period, every stop was crucial. Waterloo’s margin was only stretched to two goals when an empty-netter set the final score with 16 seconds remaining.

Celebrating his birthday in Sioux Falls the next night, Beydoun followed up with a 31-save effort, and the Hawks prevailed, 5-2. Although the Stampede scored first, Beydoun kept Waterloo in front once the Hawks took the lead early in the second period. He made 12 stops apiece in both the second and third.

Overall, Beydoun’s 58 saves on 60 shots yielded a 96.7% save percentage. He is currently one of eight USHL goaltenders with two wins, and is also among the early-season leaders in save percentage and goals-against average. Beydoun’s shutout on Friday was the third of his USHL career; he recorded two last year for the Force.

Beydoun is the first Black Hawk to win one of the USHL’s weekly awards in 2016/17. Last season, Waterloo players were recognized on six occasions.
