Firefighters and public safety officers spent several hours Tuesday extinguishing a salvage yard fire in Cedar Falls (May 14, 2019).

The fire broke out around 5:45 PM at Aikey Salvage Yard, 1524 Independence Ave. Six junk vehicles and two others inside a large car crusher were all burning when crews arrived, Fire Chief John Bostwick said.

According to Bostwick, the fire appears to have started when a welder left hot metal too close to combustible materials.

Tankers from the Cedar Falls and Janesville Fire Departments were used to supply firefighters with water throughout the incident. Crews were at the scene for several hours putting out hot spots.

No injuries were reported.
