City of Waterloo Offers Class on How City Government Works

The City of Waterloo is offering residents the opportunity to learn about city government by participating in a new eight-week course.

Waterloo Works! Residents Academy is an informative, interactive program designed to give Waterloo residents an in-depth look at how their city government works. The Residents Academy is free to Waterloo residents.

The program is designed to cultivate understanding and enhance the relationship between city government and its residents. Participants will gain knowledge and insight through discussions, demonstrations and site visits. In addition, the academy gives city staff the opportunity to receive community feedback.

The 2018 spring academy is set to begin April 5, 2018 and will run for eight weeks. Classes will be held Thursday evenings lasting approximately three hours from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Some department tours may require an alternative schedule. Participants should commit to attend every session. A class schedule will be available closer to the start of the spring academy.

Each class will be held on-site at various city facilities. Topics will include:

• Introduction to City Government and Planning
• Community Development
• Public Works
• Waterloo Center for the Arts & Waterloo Public Library
• Public Safety
• Parks and Recreation
• Waste Water Plant
• Waterloo Regional Airport

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and be a resident of the City of Waterloo. The academy is not intended for children. Class size is limited to 30 individuals. Registration deadline is February 28th.
