A month without significant rainfall is increasing the burn threat in northeast Iowa.

Due to dry conditions, the State Fire Marshal is prohibiting opening burning in Fayette County until further notice. The burn ban is effective at noon on Saturday (Sept. 16, 2017).

Small campfires must be attended to while the burn ban is in place, Fayette County sheriff's officials said in a Facebook post.

State Fire Marshall Dan Wood declared the burn ban on Friday. Westgate Fire Chief Bill Kime made the request on behalf of all fire departments in Fayette County.

According to the State Fire Marshal's proclamation, the burn ban will be in place until conditions improve and the danger to life or property no longer exists.

Violating the burn ban is a simple misdemeanor.
