A Strong Second Half Pushes Burlington Notre Dame To Win
Riley Kilbride's big second half helped Burlington Notre Dame win their opening game in the 2016 Iowa High School Girl's Basketball State Tournament (Feb 29, 2016).
Notre Dame beat Kee, 56-44
Kilbride scored 24 of her 25 points in the final two quarters and fourth-ranked Notre Dame shook off a sluggish start to beat No. 5 Kee High 56-44 to move into the Class 1A semifinals for the fourth straight year.
Gabrielle Koelker added 14 points for the Nikes and Emma Lynch pulled down 12 rebounds while scoring six points. Kilbride and Koelker have been on all four of Notre Dame's state tournament teams. Both will play at St. Ambrose next season.
Kee, making its state tournament debut, led throughout the first half and was up 41-37 after Chloe Severson converted a three-point play with 6:01 left.
But Kilbride knocked down three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws as Notre Dame ran off 15 straight points. Her final 3, from deep on the left wing, made it 52-41 and all but put it out of reach after the Nikes trailed by as many as nine points.
Kilbride missed all five of her shots in the first half and had just a single free throw to show for the opening 16 minutes. But she hit a 3 midway through the third quarter, then scored on a fastbreak layup 90 seconds later and that seemed to get her going. She also had five of Notre Dame's 14 steals.
Mikayla Gavin led Kee with 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while freshman Makayla Walleser scored 11 and Ashlee Schwartzhoff added nine.
Notre Dame, the 2014 state champion, will take a 24-1 record against top-ranked Turkey Valley in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. Thursday. Kee finishes 22-3 after setting a school record for victories.
