A Northeast Iowa man has been jailed, for leading deputies on a chase in a stolen vehicle, and crashing it into a squad car.

The incident began at about 5:30pm Monday (Oct. 26) in Butler County, and ended in Bremer County.

The Butler County Sheriff received a report that a truck was being driven erratically. When the deputy stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver, he sped off.

The driver was identified as Nicholas Schwartz. During the chase, officers put down stop-sticks, twice disabling two of the truck's tires.

Schwartz was finally stopped in Tripoli, after he ran into a Tripoli Police Department squad car; no injuries were reported. Schwartz was then finally taken into custody.

An investigation determined that Schwartz took the vehicle from the bowling alley in Tripoli, without the owner's permission.

He is being charged in Butler County with Eluding and OWI. The Bremer County Sheriff will be charging Schwartz with Operating without the Owner's Consent, Reckless Driving, and two stop sign violations during the pursuit.

Besides the Bremer and Butler County Sheriff, responding agencies included Clarksville Police, Iowa State Patrol, Chickasaw County Sheriff, Tripoli Police, Janesville Police, Tripoli Fire Department and Tripoli EMS.
