Waterloo East begins a new era with a new coach when the season begins Friday night. The Trojans -- like all other Class-4A teams in Iowa -- will play district football for the first time in 2014.

Long-time assistant Richard Carter is East's third head coach in as many seasons. After a winless 2013 campaign, he says an experienced offensive line should be a strength for the Trojans.

“We have all of our guys (on the line) returning this year,” Carter said. “A lot of them have a year (of experience) under their belt. We have two sophomores who are juniors now, so the offensive line will be one of our strong points."

East renews an old rivalry, playing at Marshalltown. The old Big Eight Conference members are meeting for the time since 1990.

Friday night's schedule also includes Denver hosting Jesup, Grundy Center entertaining Montezuma and Tripoli hosting Central Community.
