We Tried to Make Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag [Watch]
This is a great family activity, and the kids will love it because it involves ice cream. In this edition of the 'Ten Minute Chef', we make homemade ice cream in a bag... and in less than ten minutes.
We stumbled onto a receipt on how to make homemade ice cream using a zip-lock bag, and we thought we'd give it a try. In the end, we were surprised how easy it was to do, and that it actually tasted pretty darn good. This would be a great activity to do with the kids on a hot summer day or at night by the camp fire.
Give it a try. The ingredients and instructions are below. If you do try it, please post a comment below to let us know how it went for you.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup half and half
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup ice cream salt (Kosher will work too)
- 1 quart-size zip-lock bag
- 1 gallon-size zip-lock bag
- Ice cubes
- You can add any of your favorite ice cream mix-ins & toppings
Serving size is one large serving, or two really, really small, you better make some more servings.
STEP 1:
You need to add all of the ice cream ingredients into a quart-pint size zip-lock bag. This includes: 1 cup half and half, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and half a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Tightly seal the bag and mix the ingredients.
STEP 2:
Grab the gallon-size zip-lock bag and fill it half full of ice. Next add in the ice cream salt. Sprinkle enough to cover the top layer. Shake it up for a few seconds, and finally, add in the pint-size bag of ingredients you made in Step 1 and seal it in the bag of ice.
NOTE: Make sure you get a good seal on both bags, so none of the contents leak out. You can always double bag one or both of the bags to limit the possible mess.
STEP 3:
Shake the bag for 5 to 10 minutes. Periodically check the thickness of the ice cream. Keep going until the ice cream begins to harden. We went about 6 minutes, and it worked great for us.
STEP 4:
It's time to eat.
STEP 5: Optional
Repeat Steps 1 through 4.
