The City of Waterloo sanitation department is implementing one-side garbage collection starting Sunday (May 1, 2016).

The pilot program will affect customers living on dead-end streets only. All affected customers have been notified by letter explaining the change, city officials said.

According to the sanitation department, the intent of the garbage collection change is to improve efficiency and reduce the required number of passes down each dead-end street and not to inconvenience customers. The change is expected to improve safety for all citizens on these streets and reduces both maintenance and fuel expenses.

City officials are hoping that residents and their associations might work together to assist those who may have difficulties in making these changes.

The pilot program is scheduled to run through Oct. 30, 2016, at which time its effectiveness will be measured. City officials welcome and encourage public comments. Contact the Waterloo Sanitation Department at (319) 291-4455.
