Waterloo Fire Rescue is mourning the loss of a firefighter who was struck and killed by a vehicle while jogging in the city Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 29, 2017).

In a news release, Waterloo police identified the firefighter as Gregory Freshwater, 27. Authorities said Freshwater was running near the intersection of Ansborough Ave. and Shaulis Road when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle, driven by Daren Abbott of Dysart. Freshwater was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Freshwater apparently didn't see the SUV before being struck. According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates that Freshwater was running east on Shaulis and entered into the intersection in front of Abbott's southbound SUV. Officers were called to the scene around 4 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation by Waterloo police.

According to his Facebook page, Freshwater was a firefighter in Marshalltown before joining Waterloo Fire Rescue in 2016.
