Waterloo Approves New Housing Development

The Waterloo City Council voted 6-1 on Monday to approve a housing development on the property where the old Lafayette School stands.

Demolition of the old school had previously been approved by the council, and the plan for the new development calls for 14 homes to be built on the site after the demolition is complete.

Back in November, the city cancel had put a 60 day hold on the residential plan. During that time, they tried to market it for commercial development.  There were no offers that were submitted.

Shawn McKenna, who attended Lafayette School in the early 1970's said of the pending development

"that building has been an eyesore for decades now, I'm glad it's finally going to be torn down to make way for something positive"

The process may take up to two years to complete.
