Wanninger & Irvine Make Last Lap Passes for 2014 Marshalltown’s Frostbuster Wins

Engines roared back to life at the high banked quarter-mile on Friday (April 11, 2014).  It was the annual Frostbuster, and it served as the kick-off to the 50th Anniversary of the Speedway. The pit area was jammed with 139 cars from five different states and one province in Canada.

In the IMCA Modified A-Main, Troy Cordes jumped to the early lead, and he was able to pull away.  A few early cautions kept the field close to Cordes.  After a lap four caution, Cordes started to pull away.  As he encountered lap traffic, Todd Shute chased him down. The yellow flag flew again on lap 23. Cordes was able to hold off Shute and Richie Gustin on the restart. Luke Wanninger got by Gustin for third and then slipped passed Shute. Wanninger made a last lap pass around Cordes for the win.  Shute also was able to get by Cordes on the last lap for second.  Cordes settled for third.  Gustin and Adam Larson was fourth and fifth respectively.

The IMCA Stock Car feature had trouble getting started.  Two caution flags kept the race from getting started.  Once the race got rolling, it was Jay Schmidt grabbing the lead.  Schmidt would pull away, Brian Irvine was able to reel him.  As the field took the white flag, Schmidt slipped up in turns one and two.  That gave the opening Irvine needed as he pulled even.  Irvine edged Schmidt at the line for the win.  Schmidt was second. Donavon Smith, Michael Jaennette and Damon Murty rounded out the top five.

Cory Rose took the IMCA SportMod win, and Austin Lullen was the IMCA Hobby Stock Winner.

Racing continues next Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway as the 50th Anniversary season will see Kruse Family Night Season Opener. Hot Laps at 6:45 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.
