Two notable events happened in Iowa high school volleyball Tuesday night (October 7, 2014). Sumner-Fredericksburg and Dike-New Hartford met in a rare regular-season match-up of teams ranked at the top of one poll and Waverly-Shell Rock's coach recorded a milestone victory.

The Class-2A battle between top-ranked Sumner-Fredericksburg and No. 2 Dike-New Hartford created a state tournament-type atmosphere in Sumner. Fans packed the Cougars' gymnasium for the long-awaited re-match. Many of them left disappointed with the outcome.

Dike-New Hartford swept the Cougars 3-0. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-13.

The victory clinched the North Iowa Cedar League East Division championship for the Wolverines (22-2) and avenged a setback to Sumner-Fredericksburg (26-2) last month. On September 20th, the Cougars ended Dike-New Hartford's 110-match win streak against Iowa opponents when they beat the Wolverines at Dike.

Sumner-Fredericksburg took over the No. 1 ranking from the three-time defending state champions after that win. There's no doubt Dike-New Hartford will return to the top of the Class-2A poll when the rankings are released later this week.

The other notable volleyball event Tuesday night involved Waverly-Shell Rock Coach Eavon Woodin. She won her 900th career match as the Go-Hawks swept New Hampton in Northeast Iowa Conference play. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-18.
