Officials at Iowa State University have released an update on the condition of Athletic Director Jamie Pollard, who's recuperating from a heart attack.

According to a statement released by the school, Pollard will have open heart surgery in Des Moines later this week. Earlier today, he was transported from Waterloo to Des Moines Methodist Hospital, where he'll be closer to home.

“It has been overwhelming to have received so many messages of support,” Pollard said in the statement. “Our family is so appreciative of the uplifting and encouraging thoughts and prayers.”

Pollard, 50, suffered the heart attack Monday afternoon (March 9). Paramedics were called to the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls when Pollard began experiencing chest pains.

At the time he fell ill, Iowa State's athletic boss was watching his daughters compete in a high school track meet on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

An ambulance rushed Pollard to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, where he spent the night for treatment and observation.
