Something special has been happening in the West Gym. The 2013-2014 UNI wrestling season has now made history. The Panther wrestling team improved to 12-0 for the first time in the program’s history. A 21-12 win over No. 24 Purdue on Senior Day sealed the landmark deal.

They should be proud of that,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “Just the history of that - to set some history is a great thing. It’s a tribute to our guys and the guys since they took over the program - the (seniors) who were out there. We are going to miss those guys, but they have more to do this season. It was a great way to go out.”

It came down to final match with Blaize Cabell at heavyweight for UNI. His 5-3 decision win sealed the Panthers’ perfect record.

Dylan Peters earned his 16th fall of the season over a two-time NCAA qualifier. He pinned Camden Eppert in 3:34 to give UNI a 6-0 lead. Peters entered the weekend fifth in the nation for most falls among Division I wrestlers.

In the only match featuring two ranked wrestlers, No. 1 Colon earned an 8-6 decision over All-American Cashé Quiroga. Quiroga is ranked 12th by InterMat.

At 141 pounds, Joey Lazor fought off a 10-5 deficit, but a last-second reversal helped Danny Sabatello earn the 14-10 decision and give Lazor his first dual loss of the season.

We know what we are doing. We got guys that peaked at the right time last year,” said Schwab. “There’s a lot of emotions for those seniors on the last day out. I know they will feel better when it’s most important.”

A 2-0 decision for Tyler Patten over NCAA qualifier Brandon Nelsen helped extend UNI’s team lead 12-3 after the 149-pound match.

At 157 pounds, the Boilermakers got their second decision of the day with Alex Griffin, who leads the team in bonus points. Griffin earned a 3-2 decision over Jarrett Jensen.

Cooper Moore earned a 6-1 decision over NCAA qualifier Pat Robinson at 165 pounds. Ryan Loder remains as UNI’s only undefeated wrestler. He kept Lynde scoreless with a 5-0 decision.

Jared Bartel made his dual debut at 197 pounds against two-time NCAA qualifier Braden Atwood. Bartel struck first with a takedown, but it was Atwood who would take the dual, 7-5.

NEXT UP: The Panthers will hit the road for their final dual at Old Dominion set for Feb. 23. The Monarchs are ranked sixth in the MAC.
