The deadline to file papers to run for mayor of Oelwein is this Friday at 5pm, but there are already 2 candidates who have announced that they are in the run.

Current Oelwein Mayor Pro-tem Peggy Sherrets is running for the post; and local businesswoman June Griffith has also filed nomination papers.

The seat has been open for about a month, after then-mayor Jason Manus, resigned following five sex abuse charges involving 2 young girls surfaced.

The incidents allegedly happened four years ago, and Manus was charged after an investigation by the Fayette County sheriff.

The Oelwein city council had initially appointed Sherrets as mayor, and Ted Malget to fill her ward post, however area citizens filed a petition for a special election. The date of that election is October 7th; it will be held at the Oelwein Community Plaza from noon to 8pm.

There is still time to file papers for the mayoral nomination: the deadline is this Friday, Sept. 12th, at 5pm at the Fayette county auditor's office in West Union.
