A collision between a truck and motorcycle in rural Buchanan County sent two men to different hospitals on Friday (Aug. 11, 2017).

The Iowa State Patrol identified the injured as Gregory Fernau, 35, of Hazleton, and Jacob Smith, 22, of Oelwein. Fernau was air-lifted to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for treatment of unknown injuries. Smith was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein.

According to a crash report, the accident occurred while Smith was attempting a turn off Iowa Highway 281 onto County Road W-13. Fernau’s motorcycle struck the driver’s side door of Smith’s turning truck when he tried to pass the vehicle.

Iowa State troopers said Fernau was not wearing a helmet.

The accident happened just before 1:45 p.m. southwest of Oelwein.
