Residents in a couple of small, northern Linn County towns are picking up the pieces today, after a tornado touched down in the community last night (June 28).


Shortly after 6:30pm Wednesday, emergency crews responded to the report of a tornado on the ground in Prairieburg and Central City.

According to the Linn County Sheriff, Prairieburg saw the worst of the damage. One resident was injured when her garage roof fell on top of her. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

Nagel Grain Company, which is on the south edge of Prairieburg, sustained severe damages, along with semis and other vehicles that were flipped over.

The roof of a home on Main Street was torn off, but no one was home at the time.
Numerous trees and power lines were destroyed as well.

A tornado threatened the Linn County Fairgrounds near Central City, but the area was evacuated, and no injuries were reported. There was damage to some tents.

The Linn County Sheriff was assisted at the scene by fire departments from Prairieburg, Ryan, Coggon, and Central City.

Authorities also report storm damage in Clayton County, near Monona, Farmersburg and Giard. And there was some flooding in rural Fayette County.
