One person is dead after a motorist tried to avoid striking a deer in Floyd County early this (Friday) morning.

The accident happened at about 2:30am on Highway 18, just west of Rudd.

A truck driven by 19 year old Storm Gomez of Rossville, Georgia, swerved to miss a deer. Gomez over-corrected and lost control; the truck then rolled, ejecting a passenger, 54 year old Monique Seuss, also of Rossville, Georgia. Seuss was pronounced dead at the scene. Gomez, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to a Mason City hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement caution drivers that deer are more prevalent this time of year, and especially at dawn and dusk. They also warn motorists to not veer for deer, as that can cause a much worse driving scenario.

The accident was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol with assistance from the Floyd County Sheriff.
