The National Weather Service is sending a survey team to Vinton to determine if storm damage in the city was caused by a small tornado or straight-line winds early Sunday morning (July 17, 2016).

The storm ripped the roof off an apartment complex, displacing nearly 40 people. The American Red Cross set up a shelter at Vinton-Shellsburg High School overnight to help those who needed a place to stay.

Trees were uprooted and roofs were blown off of houses throughout the southwest part of city, but Vinton police reported no serious injuries. The baseball field at Vinton-Shellsburg High School was also damaged.

The National Weather Service (NWS) team is expected to be in the community to survey the damage on Monday. The crew also plans to visit the nearby Linn County town of Walford, where at least one home collapsed in the storm.

Across eastern Iowa, there were multiple reports of power outages and downed trees. In Evansdale, a large tree fell on and heavily damaged a camper at Deerwood Park. The storm also damaged a house and destroyed a shed in Jesup.

NWS officials confirmed at least two tornadoes caused damage in extreme eastern Iowa on Sunday. A twister rated EF-1 with winds of around 100 mph touched down near Andrew in Jackson County, where several trees were snapped and an agriculture coop building was destroyed. An EF-0 twister also touched down briefly in Scott County, but no serious damage was reported.
